Vortices in superconducting films: Statistics and fractional quantum Hall effect.

چکیده
We present a new derivation of the Berry phase picked up during exchange of parallel vortices. This derivation is based on the Bogolubov de Gennes formalism. The origin of the Magnus force is also critically reanalised. The Magnus force can be interpreted as interaction with effective magnetic field. The efective magnetic field may be even of the order 10T/Å. We discuss a possibility of the FQHE in vortex systems. As the real magnetic field is varied to drive changes in vortex density, the vortex density will prefer to stay at some quantised values. The mere existence of the FQHE does not depend on vortex quantumstatistics although the pattern of the plateaux does. We also discuss how the density of anyonic vortices can lower the effective strengh of the Magnus force, what might be observable in measurements of Hall resitivity. Nonlocal electrodynamics of Josephson junctions in thin films and fractional vortices
The phase difference φ across a Josephson junction is considered for a film with a thickness d λ, where λ is the London penetration depth in the superconducting banks. Special attention is given to the case of a critical current density jc varying along the junction. It is shown that a nonlinear integro-differential equation determines the spatial distribution of φ for d λ. Josephson properties...
متن کاملVarious Geometric Aspects of Condensed Matter Physics
OF THE DISSERTATION Various Geometric Aspects of Condensed Matter Physics by Zhenyu Zhou Doctor of Philosophy in Physics Washington University in St. Louis, 2013 Professor Alexander Seidel, Chairperson Geometric aspect of condensed matter has arouse a lot of interests in recent years. The idea of Berry phase is highly appreciated in various systems. We explored the geometric features of two spe...
متن کاملSignatures of fractional statistics in noise experiments in quantum Hall fluids.
The elementary excitations of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids are vortices with fractional statistics. Yet, this fundamental prediction has remained an open experimental challenge. Here we show that the cross-current noise in a three-terminal tunneling experiment of a two dimensional electron gas in the FQH regime can be used to detect directly the statistical angle of the excitations of t...
متن کاملVortices in superconducting films are anyons
We point out that nontrivial quantumstatistics of vortices in planar superfluid systems has its origin in the Schrodinger equation rather then the Chern-Simons term. Vortices in superfluid helium films are not anyons because helium films are compressible. Quantum Hall effect layers admit vortices with nontrivial statistical interactions thanks to their incompressibility. We consider type II pla...
متن کاملJosephson vortices with fractional flux quanta at YBa2Cu3O7Àx grain boundaries
We report numerical simulations of magnetic flux patterns in asymmetric 45° @001#-tilt grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3O72x superconducting films. The grain boundaries are treated as Josephson junctions with a critical current density j c(x) alternating rapidly along the junctions with a typical length scale which is much less than Josephson penetration depth. We demonstrate the existence of Josephs...
